Vinous 93 points - Blends of this age are sometimes disappointing “tweeners,” but Drouin’s 25-year-old manages to deliver a lovely, if pricey, spirit. The color of a bright copper penny, there’s a loud, expressive nose of spices and fresh herbs swirling around apple strudel, with hints of smoke and rancio. Very spicy on the palate, balanced somewhat by sweeter flavors of cherry pit, almond paste, and apple pastry, which carries through the fiery finish. This is a rye whiskey drinker’s Calvados. But the heart of Drouin’s portfolio is its vintages, dating all the way back to 1939, one of the few Calvados to survive World War II. In this report, I reviewed a handful of Drouin’s most important vintages from various decades, including ones more readily found in export markets. - From Calvados: The Apple Of A Brandy Drinker’s Eye (Nov 2018) by Jason Wilson A subtle beauty, dark amber in color, with aromas as seet and rich as buttery apple crisp. The palate is lush and round with hints of toffee and smoke, complex but still fruity with a smooth, lingering taste. Altogether decadent!
